What is BZIP2-compressed TAR?
A TAR file archive compressed with bzip2, also commonly named TBZ or TBZ2.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
A .tar.bz2 file wraps TAR header and data blocks in a bzip2 compressed stream. [1][2]
Background and compatibility
The bzip2 layer compresses the TAR byte stream, while TAR retains member names and metadata. [1][2]
