What is GZIP-compressed TAR?
A TAR archive wrapped in GZIP compression, preserving the names and contents of multiple files.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
A .tar.gz file places a TAR archive inside a GZIP stream; after GZIP decompression, TAR headers and 512-byte blocks describe the members. [1][2]
Background and compatibility
GZIP compresses a byte stream and TAR preserves member paths and metadata, so full extraction must decode both layers. [1][2]
