What is Animated PNG?
An extension of PNG for multiple animation frames with full-color images and alpha transparency. APNG can avoid GIF’s limited color palette.
Treat animated input separately from canvas still images. A still-image output intentionally keeps one frame.
Technical details
APNG adds animation-control and frame-control chunks to PNG; fdAT carries frame image data alongside the PNG IDAT data stream. [1]
Background and compatibility
An APNG still contains a static PNG image, and a decoder without APNG support can ignore the animation chunks and display that image. [1]
