What is BMP?
A bitmap image format often stored without compression. Useful for older software.
Technical details
BMP stores a bitmap file header, a DIB information header, optional color data, and pixel rows; versions differ in headers, compression, and color support. [1]
Background and compatibility
The Windows bitmap family includes historical Windows and OS/2 header variants, so extensions alone do not identify every encoding choice. [1]
