What is BZIP2?
A compressed data stream using the bzip2 algorithm. Multiple input files are packed in TAR before compression.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
Bzip2 streams use block-sorting compression based on the Burrows-Wheeler transform followed by move-to-front and Huffman coding. [1]
Background and compatibility
The .bz2 suffix names compressed data; the codec itself does not store an archive directory or original file paths. [1]
