What is CPIO archive?
A Unix archive format used for file bundles and system packages. Local extraction retains regular file contents.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
CPIO stores a sequence of file headers followed by names and data; archive variants differ in header fields, alignment, and numeric representation. [1]
Background and compatibility
CPIO appears in Unix packaging and boot/initramfs workflows; readers need to identify its flavor, such as newc or odc. [1]
