What is DirectDraw Surface?
A texture container used in graphics and game development. DDS can carry compressed image surfaces and mipmaps.
Export writes a single flattened texture. Cubemaps, mipmap chains, and engine-specific texture properties are not preserved.
Technical details
DDS places a magic value and header before texture data; header flags describe mipmaps, cubemaps, volume textures, arrays, and pixel format. [1]
Background and compatibility
Microsoft documents DDS as a texture-oriented DirectDraw Surface format used by Direct3D applications and game assets. [1]
