What is Microsoft Word document?
The binary Word document format used before DOCX. Local conversion imports the document through LibreOffice and can export Word, OpenDocument, RTF, or PDF.
The browser Office engine needs a current desktop Chrome or Edge browser, an approximately 79 MB download, and at least 1 GB of free memory. The workspace shows when a hosted fallback is needed. Fonts and unsupported document features can affect the result. Macros and external-link updates are disabled.
Technical details
Legacy Microsoft Office binary documents use application-specific records in a Compound File Binary container rather than OOXML's ZIP/XML packaging. [1]
Background and compatibility
These formats belong to the pre-OOXML Office generation; modern office applications provide compatibility modes, but round-tripping can alter features. [1]
