What is GZIP?
A compressed stream for one file. TAR is often used first to bundle multiple files.
Technical details
GZIP wraps a DEFLATE stream in a header and trailer carrying flags, optional metadata, and a CRC/size check; concatenated members are permitted. [1]
Background and compatibility
RFC 1952 defines GZIP as a stream format, not an archive, which is why .tar.gz is two nested layers. [1]
