What is JPEG 2000 codestream?
A raw JPEG 2000 codestream containing compressed image data. Unlike JP2, it does not use the surrounding JP2 file-format box structure.
Raw codestream output has fewer container metadata facilities than JP2.
Technical details
J2K carries a JPEG 2000 codestream directly, without the JP2 box-based wrapper used for file-level properties and metadata. [1]
Background and compatibility
The codestream and JP2 file format are distinct layers, so .j2k and .jp2 are not interchangeable labels. [1]
