What is JPEG?
Compact, lossy images for photographs. JPEG does not preserve transparency.
Technical details
JPEG uses block-based transform coding: baseline images are divided into 8×8 sample blocks and encoded as quantized coefficients. [1]
Background and compatibility
The Library of Congress record describes the JFIF interchange profile and notes that JPEG coding itself does not provide alpha transparency. [1]
