What is M4V?
An MPEG-4 video container used by Apple software. Unprotected M4V files are closely related to MP4 and can contain H.264 video and AAC audio.
DRM-protected purchases are not supported. Output uses an MP4 container with the M4V extension.
Technical details
M4V and MP4 can use the same ISO Base Media File Format container; the extension does not change the contained track or codec structure. [1]
Background and compatibility
HandBrake uses the M4V suffix for some MP4 outputs with chapter markers, SRT subtitles, or AC-3 passthrough because of player compatibility behavior. [1]
