What is MPEG audio Layer II?
A lossy MPEG audio format used in broadcast and legacy media workflows. MP2 is Layer II audio and is distinct from the later MP3 Layer III format.
Bitrate and sample-rate choices must be supported by the encoder; output does not become lossless.
Technical details
MPEG-1 Audio Layer II uses subband transform coding and psychoacoustic bit allocation to represent audio frames. [1]
Background and compatibility
Layer II is common in broadcast and digital radio; FFmpeg lists raw MP2 separately from MP3/Layer III. [1]
