What is MPG?
A common short extension for MPEG program streams. It can package synchronized video and audio in one file for legacy playback workflows.
MPG and MPEG are extension variants, not separate compression technologies.
Technical details
MPEG/MPG can carry an MPEG-1 Systems program stream that multiplexes audio and video into packs. [1]
Background and compatibility
FFmpeg associates MPEG-1 program streams with Video CD tracks; the same extensions are used for related MPEG data, so inspect the stream. [1]
