What is Portable Arbitrary Map?
A Netpbm format with a flexible header describing image depth and tuple type. PAM can represent grayscale, color, and alpha-bearing image data.
Conversion uses the supported raster channels; arbitrary scientific tuple semantics are not interpreted.
Technical details
PAM uses a P7 text header with WIDTH, HEIGHT, DEPTH, MAXVAL, and TUPLTYPE fields followed by a raster; tuple types can add an alpha plane. [1]
Background and compatibility
PAM generalizes PBM, PGM, and PPM layouts, enabling one header format for grayscale, RGB, and alpha-bearing pixel tuples. [1]
