What is PCX?
A raster format introduced for PC Paintbrush. PCX uses run-length encoding and remains useful when working with older graphics software.
Output is a flattened raster; palette and transparency capabilities differ from PNG.
Technical details
PCX begins with a 128-byte header describing dimensions, color planes, palette, and encoding, followed by row-oriented bitmap data that uses run-length encoding. [1]
Background and compatibility
ImageMagick identifies PCX as the ZSoft IBM PC Paintbrush file format, tying it to the PC Paintbrush graphics ecosystem. [1]
