What is RPM package?
A Linux software package. Local extraction exposes its archive payload; it does not install software or run package scripts.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
An RPM package has lead/signature/header metadata and a payload archive, traditionally CPIO content compressed as a stream. [1]
Background and compatibility
RPM began in the Red Hat package-management ecosystem and is used by multiple Linux distributions; metadata and installed files are distinct sections. [1]
