What is TAR?
An archive that bundles files without compression. Often paired with GZIP.
Technical details
TAR stores members as file-header and data blocks in 512-byte units; TAR records paths and metadata but does not compress payloads. [1]
Background and compatibility
The POSIX pax format extends older TAR variants with longer paths and additional metadata, while compressed TAR files add a separate outer stream. [1][2]
