What is XZ-compressed TAR?
A TAR archive compressed with XZ, commonly used for software source packages and file bundles.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
A .tar.xz file places 512-byte TAR blocks inside an XZ stream, whose format has its own blocks, index, and footer. [1][2]
Background and compatibility
XZ provides the outer compression stream while TAR carries file names and metadata for multiple members. [1][2]
