What is TAR.Z archive?
A TAR archive wrapped in an additional compression stream; extraction requires both stages.
Server conversion requires a compatible engine we host and a verified file variant.
Technical details
A .tar.z file can wrap TAR blocks in the Unix compress stream, whose POSIX utility convention uses the .Z suffix. [1][3]
Background and compatibility
GNU tar supports traditional compress as an outer archive compressor; its .Z stream must be decoded before TAR members can be read. [2][1][3]
