What is WebP?
A web image format supporting lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation.
Technical details
WebP uses a RIFF container whose chunks carry VP8 lossy data or VP8L lossless data; extended files can add alpha, metadata, or animation. [1]
Background and compatibility
Google documents WebP for web delivery; animation uses ANIM and ANMF chunks inside the same container. [1]
