What is Windows Imaging Format?
A file-based Windows image container. Local conversion handles regular files; it does not create a bootable or deployable Windows installation.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
WIM is a file-based imaging container that stores file resources and metadata in a single image; resources can be shared between named images. [1]
Background and compatibility
Microsoft designed WIM for Windows deployment and recovery; one WIM may contain multiple images that share stored resources. [1]
