What is Windows Media Video?
Windows Media Video files commonly wrap Microsoft video and audio codecs in an ASF container. They appear in many older Windows recordings.
Tested output uses WMV2/Windows Media Video 8 and WMA2; not WMV9 or DRM encryption.
Technical details
ASF organizes media as streams with packet timing and metadata; WMV and WMA identify Microsoft video/audio codec families often carried in ASF. [1]
Background and compatibility
The ASF specification separates container from stream codecs, so ASF parsing does not by itself imply support for every WMA/WMV codec generation. [1]
