What is X BitMap?
A monochrome bitmap format written as C-style source text. XBM was used for icons and cursors in the X Window System.
Black and white only. The text is parsed as image data and is not compiled or executed.
Technical details
XBM encodes monochrome bitmap dimensions and pixel bits as C-language definitions, so its image payload is textual source code. [1]
Background and compatibility
The X Window System used XBM for small black-and-white icons; C syntax made bitmap data easy to compile into X applications. [1]
