What is GIMP image?
GIMP’s project format can contain layers, selections, paths and other editing data. Local export produces a raster image.
Verified with GIMP’s official 50×51 sample. Raster export does not preserve an editable GIMP project. XCF output is unavailable.
Technical details
XCF stores a GIMP image as an editable document with layer and image structures rather than only a flattened raster. [1]
Background and compatibility
XCF is GIMP's native working format; its structure changes with GIMP versions, so export to a common raster can improve interchange. [1]
