What is Excel macro-enabled workbook?
An Office Open XML workbook type that can contain macros. Its tabular cell data can be read without executing the embedded programs.
Input data extraction only is the clearest product choice. Current conversions neither run nor preserve VBA; exporting XLSM would not add macros.
Technical details
Office Open XML files are OPC ZIP packages of related parts; XML parts describe workbook, word-processing, or presentation content while relationships connect resources. [1]
Background and compatibility
ECMA-376 standardizes WordprocessingML, SpreadsheetML, and PresentationML; macro-enabled extensions carry a macro project and can face application security restrictions. [1]
