What is X PixMap?
A text-based pixmap format that describes pixels using a color table and character sequences.
Exports contain a flattened raster image. Editing uses 8-bit browser display precision; original layers, metadata, HDR range, and scientific sample values are not retained.
Technical details
XPM stores color pixels in a textual C-like format, mapping printable character codes to palette entries and rows of pixel symbols. [1]
Background and compatibility
The X Window System used XPM for color icons; unlike XBM, its textual palette representation supports color images. [1]
