What is X Window Dump?
An image dump format produced by the X Window System’s xwd utility. It stores captured pixels with information describing the display format.
The file is decoded locally as an image; no connection to an X server is needed.
Technical details
XWD records X window image data with a header describing size, visual, byte order, and pixel layout before color and image data. [1]
Background and compatibility
XWD is associated with X server screen/window capture and preserves details of the X visual used to render the pixels. [1]
