What is XZ?
A compressed stream commonly using LZMA2. TAR.XZ combines a file archive with XZ compression.
Extraction keeps regular files. Links, special filesystem entries, directory permissions and installation behavior are not retained. Limit: 128 MB input, 256 MB expanded data, and 1,000 entries.
Technical details
XZ has a stream, block, index, and footer structure and can chain filters; the index makes independently compressed blocks locatable. [1]
Background and compatibility
The XZ specification separates compression from archiving; TAR is commonly layered inside XZ for multi-file archives. [1]
