What is Sun AU?
A simple audio container associated with Sun and Unix systems. An AU header describes the sound encoding, sample rate, and channel count.
Tested output uses signed 16-bit big-endian PCM; AU also has encodings with different playback requirements.
Technical details
The libsndfile AU reader parses a .snd header with data offset, data size, encoding, sample rate, and channel count fields. [1]
Background and compatibility
libsndfile maps AU encoding identifiers to supported sample types such as PCM, μ-law, and A-law, so the encoding field determines payload interpretation. [1]
