What is OpenEXR?
A high-dynamic-range image format used in visual effects and rendering. OpenEXR supports floating-point image channels and rich production metadata.
Browser previews and ordinary image exports are display-oriented. Deep data, multiple parts, all channels, and HDR precision are not preserved by canvas editing.
Technical details
OpenEXR channels can have independent names, sample types, and sampling; the format also supports multipart and deep pixel data. [1]
Background and compatibility
Industrial Light & Magic created OpenEXR for high-dynamic-range visual effects; channels can preserve values outside display-referred 8-bit images. [1]
