What is FITS?
Flexible Image Transport System stores scientific arrays and metadata, especially in astronomy. FITS can hold more than a single ordinary display image.
Only supported image planes are decoded. Do not use a visual export as a preservation copy of scientific arrays, units, or headers.
Technical details
FITS stores header records and data in fixed 2880-byte blocks; each header record is 80 bytes and describes a data unit. [1]
Background and compatibility
NASA documents FITS as an astronomy/science interchange standard designed to preserve scientific arrays and associated metadata. [1]
